2 weeks of Singapore Idol competition has passed! 14 of them have sung and 4 of them are now in the final 12.
But wait...er...28 contestants, 12 finalists, 4 weeks of Piano Show, 7 contestants a week, 2 voted in per week...that gives 8 finalists and as usual, a REVIVAL round. Seems like they can't just pick 3 out of 12. They must have revivals.
No matter which IDOL, SUPER or STAR show I watch, there's alwaysa REVIVAL. I think Mediacorp has a few vampire$ and zombie$ managing the show$. It$ nice to $ee people get kicked out and come back hor? Fun right? $ee them cry, $ee them $ad, then $ee them come back and laugh! Woo hoo!
Anyway, it sorts of give them a chance to come back and re-fulfill a fallen dream that will crash again lah anyway. Even if it does give them another chance to come back and try again, will it even be helpful? If they are no good, they are no good! Unless the talent pool is bursting and flooding the gates of Singapore, otherwise what's there to revive? Oh yah...I forgot...its to revive another kind of pool. The kind filled with paper that has a lot of nice faces next to numbers. Oh well.
Enough about reincarnations and restorations. I have something to say about the quality of the competition setup. What I find most distracting and outstandingly piercing is the music for the singers. Two things make up a song: Vocals and Music. If the music itself sounds like a primary school choir session, can you reasonably expect a singer of Grammy quality?
If you play that kind of kiddy sounding music for me to sing to, I think I'll just pass. Why not try asking No Doubt to sing to "tnk tnk tnk" music for their songs? Or maybe ask Michael Jackson to dance to a "tnk tnk tnk" version of Billie Jean? A keyboard is totally insufficient! At least have a proper band! Come on! How expensive is a band? Even those guys on Superband can play better sounding music than the music being played for the contestants to sing to. I would rather have a Karaoke DVD music with proper sounding drums and instruments than an artificial sounding keyboard. Heck, a beatboxer would make me feel more alive to sing than having "tnk tnk tnk" in the background!
I really pity those contestants. Even if they can sing like a pro, the moment the "tnk tnk tnk" starts I think half the mood is gone. Sian Ji Bua (hokkien for "half the mood" lah) you know? Give them the proper backing to sing their best! At least, give them a earpiece to hear the music and their own voice when they are singing!
Singapore Idol...nice idea, but please lah, $pend on what i$ nece$$ary and if possible, u$e the revival to rai$e $ome fund$ for a proper band lah..
